Singer Nelly Furtado appeared on last night's CSI:NY franchise as an amazingly successful shoplifter at high-priced New York boutiques. Towards the very end of the episode, one of the CSIs found a device in a purse they confiscated from Furtado's character. And guess what? It was a "credit card scanner" which, according to two other CSI characters is "based on RFID", "works remotely" and "from three feet".
I'm guessing that the writing team read that New York Times article about the inherent security flaws in RFID-based credit cards, which I've discussed a few times. No doubt the episode was shot months ago. Since the NY Times article, credit card companies have skirted around the issues or outright denied them, but have said that their cards (meaning the new generation) are secure and have new security features.
Still, that's not going to stop speculation from TV shows and movies. RFID tech was also mentioned in Law + Order: SVU a few months back.

MedicAlert, a provider of medical information services and personal health record management, has tapped RFID technology to streamline and facilitate access to personal health information. Teaming with chip manufacturer Advanced Micro Devices and Siemens IT Solutions and Services, MedicAlert will launch a pilot at California State University, Stanislaus on March 1st aimed at enhancing student access to their medical records.
The pilot will last 90 days and will involve 200 students. Each of the participating students will be issued an RFID card which stores a unique identification number. The ID number will be linked to their personal health records within the MedicAlert repository. Secure kiosks will be installed at the student health centers around campus. Upon entering a health center, a student merely passes the RFID card within range of the kiosk's reader to have his or her medical records promptly printed out.

いよいよ普及期に入り始めたRFIDですが、2007年から2008年に導入を検討されている企業も多いことと思います。RFID技術は、これまでの「動く／動かない」という実験レベルから、「動いたらどれくらい効果的か」という実用レベルにまで成熟してきました。
しかしながら、RFIDシステムでは従来の業務のシステム化とは異なる側面があり、期待どおりの効果が得られない場合もあるようです。本連載では RFIDを導入検討している企業のシステム担当者に向けて、RFIDシステムの特性に着目してポイントを押さえたチューニングについて述べたいと思います。
今回は、まずシステムの目的について明確にします。次にRFIDに期待される効果を述べ、最後に実際の問題点について説明します。

韓国のRFIDミドルウエア・ベンダーであるジャバ・インフォメーション・テクノロジが，東京ビッグサイトで開催中の「NET& COM2007」において，同社のミドルウエア製品「CARU」（Context-Aware RFID Middleware System for Ubiquitous Services）を日本で初めて披露した。現在，日本でのパートナを探しており，今回は日本企業などとの情報交換のためブースを構えたという（写真）。
CARUは，ICタグリーダーからデータを収集し，重複するものをフィルタリングしたり，データを加工したりする機能を持つ。無線ICタグの国際標準化団体「EPCグローバル」が定めるRFIDミドルウエアの標準規格（ALEなど）に準拠する。ICタグリーダーは，米エイリアン・テクノロジや米シング・マジックのUHF帯対応製品のほか13.56MHz帯対応の製品にも対応する。
韓国内では，航空手荷物管理や，韓国自動車メーカーのGM大宇での生産工程管理などで実績があるという。今回のブースでは，小型のLinux専用機でミドルウエアを動かし，模型の電車に取り付けたUHF帯対応ICタグを読み取るデモを行っていた。

三菱電機は，数メートルという長距離通信が可能なUHF帯を使う無線ICタグが来年度以降に普及期に入るという見解を示した。2007年2月9日，NET&COM2007の展示ブースで無線ICタグのデモを見せ，関連製品が成熟しつつあることを示した。
UHF帯の無線ICタグは，タグとアンテナの距離を1～5メートルと長く確保できるのが特徴。荷物の搬入といった物流用途で使われる。
三菱電機の説明員によれば，UHF帯無線ICタグ関連製品の価格は，ここ半年で約半分にまで下がってきている。2006年中旬に三菱電機を含む各社が出荷した初期版の評価キットは百数十万円していたが，2006年末には70万円前後にまで下がってきているという。
リーダー/ライターだけでなく，ICタグの価格も下がってきている。三菱電機が開発した，水分や金属の影響を受けにくいよう素材に工夫を凝らした金属用 ICタグの価格も，従来は1枚3000円程度していたが，現在では1500円程度である。ラベル型のタグは数百円で収まるという。金属用ICタグは， 2006年2月に開催したNET&COM 2006でデモンストレーションをして話題を呼んだ。
