RFID News:RFID and Aviation, A Hot Market ...

... and a big "duh."

Analysts have been saying for YEARS that RFID will help aviation-maintenance pros, airlines, and supply chain managers in all aspects of the industry (luggage checks, preventing terrorist attacks, etc.).

According to this report from an RFID market watcher, "baggage costs $2.5 billion per annum and increasingly airlines and airports need to show and be able to prove that baggage has been properly screened."

RFID Journal:Scaling Down RFID Investments

By Priyanka Gouthaman

Dec. 25, 2006—Layoffs and cutbacks appear to be the new buzzwords within the industry, with announcements from both Sirit and Checkpoint Systems in recent weeks. Critics of RFID technology have been quick to point to such announcements, claiming the market continues to be driven more by hype than by reality. (Though there are a few produce suppliers who are experimenting with food grade RFID tags.)

Green RFID Guy:Marketing RFID-Enabled Recycling

Yes, I know, I’ve been a very bad blogger lately… you have my sincere apologies. Thanks for sticking with me.

Today’s item is a story I somehow missed when it got some attention last month, but serves as a perfect addendum to my last post.

Via EcoGeek (and Sustainablog and Forbes) comes the story of RecycleBank in Philadelphia, a company which rewards consumer recycling by translating household efforts into monetary awards redeemable at participating businesses. Participants can earn up to $35 (~27 euros) per month.
